Glaucoma Awareness Month
Glaucoma Awareness month’s main objective is to spread the word, that Glaucoma is a sight stealing disease, which is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the UK, but can be prevented!
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma occurs when eye pressure in the eye is elevated. This causes damage to the optic nerve, which is the cable at the back of the eye that connects the eye to the brain. When nerve fibres are lost, vision is lost.
In the early stages of glaucoma, people very often do not feel any problem or see any changes until later in the disease. When people lose their vision to glaucoma, it’s their peripheral vision first, followed then by their central vision.
Preventing Glaucoma
Regular eye examinations are the key to preventing vision loss and even blindness. This is especially true, if you have a family history of glaucoma.
A regular eye examination will check:
- your eye pressure is good
- you haven’t lost any nerve tissue
- your visual field (peripheral vision)
