Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma awareness is important for all of us to share. Glaucoma is known as the silent thief of sight, because the loss of vision usually occurs slowly over a long period of time, this is why early detection is key!

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is often due to increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). This can lead to gradual vision loss and potentially blindness.

  • Increased pressure / fluid imbalance – Your eye constantly produces fluid, which should drain out through a drainage angle. Glaucoma occurs when this drainage system malfunctions. This causes fluid to build up and pressure to rise, damaging the optic nerve.
  • Optic nerve – This nerve transmits visual information from your eye to your brain, so damage directly affects your sight.

Regular eye exams are the key to identifying eye health concerns such as glaucoma. Book your next eye exam here!

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life. Along with its physical and hormonal effects, it may also negatively impact eye health and result in menopause eye problems. Some of the common menopause eye problems include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eye strain

Dry Eyes

The hormonal changes from menopause contribute to the development or worsening of dry eyes. Estrogen plays a role in maintaining the tear-producing glands’ health and the stability of the tear film. When estrogen levels decline, it leads to changes in tear production and composition.

Symptoms of dry eyes during menopause may include:

  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Itchiness
  • Redness
  • Blurry Vision
  • Grittiness
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Increased sensitivity to light

Blurry Vision

As estrogen levels decline, some women may notice temporary alterations in their vision, including haziness. Having blurry eyesight in menopause is quite common.

Fluctuating Vision

Fluctuating vision is another common complaint among women going through menopause. Some individuals report their vision changes throughout the day, with periods of clear vision followed by blurriness or difficulty focusing. While these changes are frustrating, they are can be temporary and can improve as the body adapts to its new hormonal balance.

Sensitivity to Light

Hormonal shifts make eyes more sensitive to brightness by altering the way the eye’s cells and structures respond to light stimulation.

Bright lights, both natural and artificial, can become uncomfortable or even painful. This sensitivity can interfere with daily activities such as reading, working on a computer, or spending time outdoors on sunny days. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection outdoors and adjusting lighting conditions indoors will help reduce glare.

Eye Strain

Eye strain is also a common menopause eye issue. This is common when undertaking activities require long periods of close work, such as reading, using hand held digital devices, or doing close-up work. Symptoms include:

  • Eye discomfort
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty maintaining clear vision

Managing Menopause Symptoms

While these issues can be annoying, they tend not to be serious. Here are some tips to alleviate symptoms:

  • Artificial Tears – over-the-counter artificial tears are an effective relief for dry eyes. They can add moisture to the eye to give you relief from the discomfort
  • Maintain Eye Health – regular eye exams can allow us to diagnose and treat any conditions.
  • Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays – wear sunglasses with UV filters when outside.
  • Limit Screen Time = follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Speak to a doctor about your personal needs and whether HRT  is suitable.

Speak to us if you are having any issues with your eyes.
