Why should your child visit an optician?

You may think that its not that important to have your child’s eye examined before they can read, but eye exams can detect issues that, if not addressed early on, can affect your child’s vision for life. It has also been known for a child who has been diagnosed with learning issue, may have a vision problem.

Clear vision and healthy eyes are important for your child to reach their full potential in everything they do, at school, in the playground, playing sports or whatever they are interested in.

At your child’s examination, you optician will advise you how often they need to have their eyes checked.

What to expect during your child’s eye exam?

During the exam, we test for refractive errors such as long or short-sightedness or astigmatism. We will also check for lazy eye, crossed or misaligned eyes and blurred vision.

We will ask you whether you have any concerns, and questions like ‘do they rub their eyes?’, ‘do they squint?’  Sometimes you may not be aware of any vision problems, as kids only know how they see and may not know anything is wrong. Hence, the reason to have their eyes examined.

Summer is the perfect time to make that appointment to get their eyes checked and ensure they are reaching their full potential. Book now.

Please be aware, COVID-19 rules still apply here at Hughes, Macdonald & Davidson Opticians.

Please wear a mask, use hand sanitizer and keep follow social distancing.

We appreciate your co-operation and understanding.

As children grow, their eyes change quickly. Being vigilant about eye health is important to identify and address problems early. Here are some tips to help you be proactive about your child’s eye health.

Provide a balanced diet – nutrients such as zinc, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A, C and E have been found to be beneficial to the eye

  • Fruits with vitamins C and E, such as oranges, strawberries and mangos, can help restore tissues and prevent infections
  • The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as salmon and tuna can prevent dry eye and reduce risk of cataracts and AMD
  • Leafy greens containing vitamin A such as spinach and kale can help fight dry eye as well as blindness
  • Non-meat protein such as eggs and nuts can also help balance your child’s diet

Protect eyes with appropriate eyewear

  • wear sunglasses with UV protection when they’re out in the sun
  • as your child becomes more active, wearing protective eyewear, made with shatterproof plastic, called polycarbonate lenses will help protect their eyes from any hazards.

Look out for warning signs

  • Disinterest in distant objects
  • Squinting
  • Head tilting
  • Holding objects very close to the eyes
  • Eye rubbing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Poor hand-eye coordination
  • Disinterest in reading

Attend regular eye exams – if you think your child may have a vision problem, call us to make an appointment.
